Overview
Piriápolis combines beach-resort days with the architectural legacy of Francisco Piria. Outside the summer season, the town becomes much quieter.

Did you know?
- Castillo de Piria was the estate of the town's founder.
- San Antonio hill has a chapel near its summit.
- The marina's chairlift is nicknamed sillitas, or little chairs.
Why Go
Piriápolis is a quieter, more laid-back alternative to nearby Punta del Este, offering beach access without the premium prices and frantic nightlife. The town was developed by Francisco Piria in the early 20th century and retains a charming, historic atmosphere with his architectural legacy visible throughout. Between December and March it functions as a full-fledged beach resort, while the off-season (April-November) offers dramatic crowd reductions and lower accommodation costs. It serves as a convenient transit stop on Uruguay's Atlantic coast, halfway between Montevideo and Punta del Este.
Getting In
Buses arrive at Terminal Piriápolis, located 3 blocks north of the Casino. The bus station has a tourist office inside that provides maps and general information. Uruguay's bus network connects Piriápolis regularly with Montevideo (approximately 2-3 hours) and Punta del Este (approximately 30-45 minutes).
Getting Around
The town is compact enough to explore on foot along the beachfront. To reach the top of San Antonio hill, travelers can take a taxi, walk (approximately 45 minutes uphill), or ride the cable car ("sillitas" or "little chairs") at the marina for U$200 return. Route 37 leads north to Castillo de Piria (approximately 6 km) and continues to the wildlife reserve.
When to Go
The high season runs from December through March, when Piriápolis operates as a full beach resort with maximum crowds and higher prices. Low season (April to November) sees dramatically reduced visitor numbers and accommodation prices drop, though many tourist-oriented businesses may have limited hours or close entirely. Summer weekends can be busy with domestic tourists from Montevideo. Clear days are essential for appreciating the hilltop views—on a clear day you can see the condos of Punta del Este 50 km away.
Where to Stay
The Hotel Argentino offers old-style luxury with saltwater pools and a thermal spa; rooms with sea views are spectacular but prices run higher by Uruguayan standards. For budget-conscious travelers, Sunseaviews Property in the La Riviera building next to Hotel Argentino offers affordable flats on the beachfront with English-speaking owner assistance. Off-season accommodation rates drop significantly compared to the December-March high season.
Food and Drink
While the town has fewer fancy restaurants than Punta del Este, basic food options are available. Iguanas bar offers cocktails, meals, snacks, and live music, with staff willing to craft drinks if they have ingredients. Themis Bistro serves food to take away and has outdoor seating for coffee and cakes—both venues are known for outstanding coffee. Drinking alcohol outside eating areas or before lunch is considered rude, though not illegal.
Things to Do
The hill of San Antonio (also called Hill of the English) is the city's main peak—take the cable car ("sillitas") for panoramic views extending 50 km to Punta del Este, and stay for sunset at the chapel near the summit. Castillo de Piria, the estate of founder Francisco Piria, sits 6 km north on Route 37 and offers guided tours (check times at the tourist office next to the casino). The wildlife reserve 1.5 km further north on the same road showcases native and rare South American fauna—dedicate a full day for this visit. Cerro Pan de Azúcar (Sugar Loaf Hill) features a massive granite formation with a large cross containing a spiral stairwell; the poorly marked trail takes about 2 hours each way, requiring suitable footwear, water, and rain gear.
Connectivity
Uruguay has good internet service, and Piriápolis has many "ciber posts" (internet cafes) for those traveling with laptops. For phone calls, skip phone cards which work on some phones only—instead visit the state phone company office (Antel) located two blocks north of the casino. Cell phones from major U.S. carriers will work if they operate on the appropriate frequency band.
Safety
Piriápolis is generally considered safe for tourists, though standard precautions apply. The Railway Museum only operates during summer months. Trail hiking at Cerro Pan de Azúcar requires proper preparation—carry water, rain gear, and suitable footwear as the trail is poorly marked.
Go Next
Punta del Este lies to the east—a world-famous beach party destination that is more exciting but also more hectic than Piriápolis (approximately 30-45 minutes by bus). Minas is approximately 1.5 hours north—a hidden gem with beautiful countryside sunsets, working ranches, and options for both thrill seekers and those seeking tranquility.
