Overview
Pilanesberg National Park is one of the most accessible Big Five safari destinations in South Africa, located just a few kilometres from Sun City and approximately 2-3 hours from Johannesburg. The park sits inside an ancient volcanic crater, creating diverse terrain of rolling hills, grasslands, and riverine forests that support a wide variety of wildlife.

Before you go
Budget
Park entry fees are modest; self-drive game viewing is far cheaper than guided lodge packages. Budget approximately ZAR 150-300 per person per day for entry, fuel, and self-catered meals.
Packing
Binoculars are essential for bird and predator watching. Neutral clothing avoids显眼; binoculars and sun protection are non-negotiable items for any safari visit.
Safety
Remain in vehicles during game drives unless in designated areas. Keep food stored securely as baboons are common near picnic sites. Malaria-free status eliminates one major health concern.
Transport
Self-drive is the most budget-friendly option; all park roads are dirt but passable in standard vehicles. Three gates provide access: Bakgatla (west), Manyane (east), and Kwa Maritane.
Weather
Summer (Oct-Mar) brings heat and afternoon thunderstorms; winter (Jun-Aug) is cooler and drier, ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather at waterholes.
