Overview
Papantla serves as the cultural heart of the Totonacapan region, founded in the 13th century by the Totonacs who still maintain their language and traditions here. The city is famous for the voladores (flying men) ceremony performed at the cathedral, a UNESCO-recognized ritual where men descend from a tall pole while rotating.
