Overview
Pahalgam is a small 2-3 km town in Kashmir Valley that serves as a base for some of the region's most dramatic mountain scenery. It is famous as the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage and offers trekking to glacial lakes, pony rides to 'Mini Switzerland' (Baisaran), and white-water rafting on the Lidder River.

Safety
Security incidents have occurred near Pahalgam (2024 bus attack, April 2025 Baisaran attack). Follow official guidance, cooperate at checkpoints, avoid isolated areas after dark. Mountain terrain can change quickly with landslide and slippery path risks.
Transport
Local taxis (Sumo, Tavera) charge around ₹1500 for sightseeing with no bargaining. Ponies cost ₹500-1500 depending on season. Taxis from Srinagar or Jammu cannot take you on internal sightseeing.
Trekking
Popular treks include Aru Valley, Kohli Glacier, Tarsar Lake, Chandiwari, and the route to Leh. Stick to marked trails, avoid going alone, and check local advice before setting out.
Weather
Peak season is May-July (coincides with Amarnath Yatra). Winter brings snow and icy conditions requiring proper footwear. Mobile coverage unreliable in remote trekking areas.
