Why Go?
Jammu is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir and the largest city in the Jammu region, sitting at a low elevation in a predominantly mountainous state. Known as the 'City of Temples', it offers a slower pace than mountain destinations with dozens of historic temples, the 19th-century Amar Mahal Palace Museum, and the scenic Bahu Fort overlooking the Tawi River. It serves as the primary gateway for travelers heading north to Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley, with excellent train and air connections to the rest of India.

Understand
Jammu was founded by Raja Jambulochan in the 14th century BC, who named it Jambupur—the name later morphed to Jammu. It served as the winter capital of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir under British rule and has retained that status since India's independence. The city sits along the Tawi River and provides a dramatic contrast to the mountainous terrain of the Kashmir Valley to the north.

Most travelers arriving by train continue the same day to the bus stand for onward travel to Srinagar.
