Overview

Pacaya Volcano is one of Guatemala's most popular national parks and an active volcano that showed spectacular eruptions for several years. The experience of hiking to volcanic vents where you can roast marshmallows over real magma makes this a unique adventure destination.

Before you go

Money

Park entrance fee is Q50 for foreigners. Mandatory guide costs Q200 (Q400 for extended tour). Hiking sticks Q100, horse rental Q200. Cash is essential as there are no ATMs in the park.

Packing

Bring sturdy hiking shoes, layers for changing temperatures at elevation, sunscreen, water, and a flashlight if taking a sunset tour. Marshmallows are a fun addition for roasting at the vents.

Safety

The terrain is rocky and unstable in sections. Hiking sticks are strongly recommended. Check volcanic activity reports before visiting as the volcano remains active.

Transport

The park is 90 minutes from Antigua or Guatemala City. Tours from either city include transportation and are the easiest option. Local buses run from Guatemala City only.
