Ölgii is the capital of Bayan-Ölgii province in western Mongolia and the cultural heartland of Kazakhstan's diaspora in the country. The city serves as the primary access point for Altai Tavan Bogd and Tsambagarav National Parks, with their snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and abundant wildlife.

Safety
Public drunkenness less common than elsewhere in Mongolia but still risky. Friday alcohol restrictions should be respected. General theft not a major issue.

Taxi rides 700-2,100₮ within city; shared taxis from bazaar depart around 15:00-16:00. Jeep rentals available for park access through Visitor Center.
