Ohakune railway station connects to major North Island cities. A shuttle to Tūroa skifield takes 20 minutes; Whakapapa takes 45 minutes. Dempsey Buses serves the Tongariro Alpine Crossing for $70 return.

Winter brings heavy snow to Mount Ruapehu (June-October). Summer offers mild temperatures ideal for hiking. Weather changes rapidly in this alpine environment.
