Overview
Nuevo Progreso is a small border town in Tamaulipas, Mexico, with a population of around 10,000 people (2010). It has become a popular destination for North American senior citizens, particularly 'snowbirds' (retired Canadians and Americans from northern states who spend winters in South Texas), who cross the border for inexpensive prescription drugs and dental procedures.

US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas near the bridge. Mexican pesos (MXN) are preferred for better exchange rates. Credit cards may not be accepted at smaller establishments.

Nuevo Progreso is considered one of the safer border towns in Tamaulipas. Daylight hours are safest for visitors. Stay within the tourist zone near the bridge.

Walk across the international bridge from Progreso, Texas. Taxis available near the Aduana. Noreste buses depart from Estacion de Autobuses at Revolucion 204.
Weather
Hot and dry year-round. Summer highs exceed 100F (38C). Winters are milder but still warm. Thunderstorms possible in summer and fall.
