Novokuznetsk is the oldest city in Kemerovo Oblast (founded 1617) and serves as the regional transport hub for southern Siberia. It holds historical significance with its multiple incarnations as Kuznetsk (Blacksmith City), Stalinsk during Soviet industrialization, and its current name.
