Before you go
Festivals
The massive Festa dell'Assunta (July 31-August 15) is the biggest annual event, featuring a candle-lit procession with the Virgin Mary's statue carried through the streets by over 30 men. Carnival in February features the unique Maiorchino cheese-rolling competition.
Food
Must-try items include Maiorchino Pecorino cheese, nero e bianco mousse dessert, cassatelli pastries, and the hearty mountain dish ncasciada pasta. Most food shopping is along Via Nazionale at local shops and two pastry stores.
Language
Italian is the primary language. Locals speak a distinctive Sicilian dialect that differs noticeably from standard Italian. Basic Italian phrases are helpful, though some English may be understood at tourist-oriented establishments.
Money
Italy uses the Euro (€). ATMs are available in town. Most local shops and restaurants accept cash only. Credit cards are more reliably accepted at the tourist office and larger establishments in Taormina.
Transport
Novara di Sicilia requires a car for access and day trips. The town itself is walkable, but destinations like Taormina, Aeolian Islands ferries, and beaches require 45-90 minutes of driving. Public bus service is limited.
