Overview
Northam is a historic Wheatbelt town founded in the 1830s when the Avon Valley was colonised. It's best known as a railhead for miners heading east to the goldfields, and for launching solo round-the-world balloon voyages in 2002 and 2016.

Connectivity
Patchy mobile signal from Optus and Telstra; no Vodafone coverage. No 5G. Visitor centre open daily 9AM-4PM for local information.

Key events: hot-air ballooning (various dates), Avon Descent boat race in August with Bilya Festival in Northam, vintage motors in April, Northam Farmers Show in September.
Money
Use Australian dollars (AUD). Credit cards accepted at most shops and hotels; cash may be needed at smaller eateries. Four fuel stations in town with Ampol on Wellington St typically cheapest.
Transport
Transwa buses and Prospector Train connect Northam to Perth (80-90 min). The train station has step-free access, staffed ticket office, and toilets.
