Why go?

Perth is the most isolated continental city in the world, separated from Adelaide by 2,120 km of Nullarbor Plain, yet it remains a surprisingly vibrant and cosmopolitan destination with a population of 2.3 million. The city sprawls along a flat coastal plain dissected by the Swan River, with the Indian Ocean forming its western boundary. Despite the isolation, Perth offers Mediterranean weather, pristine beaches, excellent arts scene, and easy access to world-class wine regions without the crowds of Australia's eastern capitals.

Getting there

Perth Airport has four terminals organized into two precincts: T1/T2 on the east side and T3/T4 on the west side, connected by a free 15-minute bus. T1 and T2 have a direct rail link to the city for a flat $5 fare, while T3/T4 require a 15-minute walk to Redcliffe Station or a shuttle bus from T4. Perth serves as the main gateway to Australia's west coast with nonstop flights from Mauritius, Johannesburg, Auckland, and London Heathrow—the first regular nonstop route between Europe and Australia and among the world's longest flights.

Climate and seasons

Perth has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers (average daytime highs around 30°C, overnight lows 19°C) and mild, wet winters (around 15°C daytime, 8-10°C at night). Summer temperatures regularly exceed 36°C and can surpass 40°C, though low humidity makes conditions more bearable. The "Fremantle Doctor" sea breeze provides afternoon relief in the city centre but doesn't reach the hills. Winter brings most of the rainfall, with storms occasionally producing hail. Snow never falls in the city centre. Daylight ranges from 5:15AM to 7:15PM in summer and 7:15AM to 5:15PM in winter.

Getting around

Perth has excellent bike paths and fantastic weather almost all year round, making cycling ideal for getting around. The paths following the Swan River are very scenic and mostly flat. You can take your own bike or hire bicycles from providers near the Swan River.

Markets

Fremantle Markets are a beloved institution with over 150 independent stalls offering local crafts, fresh produce, food, and entertainment, open Friday through Sunday just 8 minutes walk from Fremantle train station. Kalamunda Farmer's Markets run every Sunday morning in Central Mall, 30 minutes from the CBD, with free parking and local produce. Manning Farmers Markets draw locals with over 50 stalls and are busiest before 10AM, reachable via public transport to Curtin University followed by a 15-minute walk. Perth City Farmers Market focuses on fresh, ethical, and sustainable produce, open Saturday 8AM-noon near Claisbrook station. Twilight Hawkers Markets operate Friday nights 4:30-9:30PM from October to April with over 50 food stalls in the city centre.

Food and dining

One of Perth's drawbacks is the lack of late-night dining—very few places serve food after 10PM even on weekends. Most restaurants do not cater well for vegetarians or vegans, and if they do, the range is extremely limited. Fremantle stands out as the best area for vegetarian-friendly options. The city centre has the largest concentration of boutique shops, while Northbridge offers niche independent stores. Trending suburbs like Mount Lawley, Leederville, and Subiaco have offbeat designer fashion stores. Luxury brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton cluster around King Street in the CBD.

Budget planning

Perth is one of Australia's more expensive cities for backpackers. Accommodation in hostels typically ranges from $35-55 per night, while motels and hotels start around $100-200 per night. Eating out at restaurants averages $20-50 per meal, though cheaper options exist at markets and takeaway shops. Transport costs are moderate by Australian standards. Daily budgets of $80-150 are realistic for budget travelers, rising to $150-300 for mid-range comfort. Weekends often see accommodation price spikes, so mid-week stays offer better value.

Day trips

Rottnest Island is one of the best day trips from Perth—a nature reserve off the Fremantle coast with diverse wildlife including the famous quokka, plus opportunities to spot whales, dolphins, and fur seals depending on the season. Closer and cheaper, Penguin Island is home to little penguins (fairy penguins) located five minutes off the Rockingham coast. The Swan Valley wine region is well renowned for wine tasting and offers limousine tour services. The Art Gallery of Western Australia, WA Museum, and PICA are top cultural attractions in the city centre.

Go next

East of Perth, Toodyay is a historical town on the Avon River with regular festivals and once home to bushranger Moondyne Joe. Hyden is the closest town to Wave Rock, a granite formation resembling a large breaking wave. South lies Margaret River (3 hours from Perth) with world-class wines, pristine beaches, and excellent food—the South West region is ideal for weekend getaways. North along Coastal Highway 60 leads to the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park, then Jurien Bay, Cervantes with its stromatolites, and Lesueur National Park for wildflowers. Further afield on multi-day road trips are Dongara, Geraldton, Kalbarri National Park, Shark Bay and Monkey Mia, Carnarvon, and Exmouth and Coral Bay for the Ningaloo Reef.

    Australian Rules Football

Perth, like Melbourne, is mad for its footy. Every weekend between (roughly) March and August, newly opened Perth Stadium (known as Optus Stadium) now hosts either the West Coast Eagles or the Fremantle Dockers clubs for Australian Football League (AFL) matches. Why not choose whose colours you like best and join in the fun? All games go on sale two weeks before each game, with the majority of seats having been pre-sold to club members. However, some tickets are always made available for opposing club members and then the general public. Average attendance for the venue's first AFL season (2018) was approximately 46,500. For a more intimate and accessible game, West Australian Football League (WAFL) games are held at numerous grounds around Perth during the same period. Crowds number only a few thousand, and you can even go on the field during the breaks to have a kick, or to listen to the coach address the team. Aussie rules football might be hard to understand at first, but it is quite exciting.
