Day trips
Baltic beaches are 40 km north; North Sea beaches are 60 km west. Plön lake district makes for a scenic half-day trip.
History
Approximately 40% of the city was destroyed in WWII bombings, so there is no historic old town to explore. The Textilmuseum documents the industrial heritage instead.
Shopping
The city is a regional shopping center with a factory outlet in the south and weekly markets (Tue, Fri, Sat) at Grossflecken. The Freesencenter mall is in the west.
Transport
Neumünster is a key rail hub on the Hamburg-Kiel corridor. Bus services typically end around 20:00, so plan evening travel accordingly. Cycling is convenient due to flat terrain.
