Overview

Why Go?
Negombo is a quiet coastal town on Sri Lanka's western shore, best known for its proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport (30 km north of Colombo). Formerly a budget traveller haunt, it offers Dutch colonial architecture, a 100-km canal network, and the country's second-largest fish market called the "Lellama". While rising hotel rates and luxury resorts have dulled its former charm, the town remains a practical stopover with canal boat rides, beach walks, and diving day trips from the beach strip.

Getting In
Bandaranaike International Airport is the main entry point, with many accommodation options starting as low as US$6 nearby. Negombo lies on the route between the airport and Colombo. Negombo Train Station connects to the capital and other destinations on Sri Lanka's rail network. Negombo Bus Station (also called Aweriwatta Bus Station) serves local and regional routes. Katunayake Bus Station near the airport handles airport transfers.

Getting Around
The town is relatively compact and walkable along the beach strip on Lewis Place. Local buses and three-wheelers (tuk-tuks) are available for shorter trips. Shane Tours on Lewis Place near Holy Rosary church rents bikes for Rs 500 per 24 hours. Boat tours of the Negombo lagoon can be arranged through hotels and tour agencies in the hotel area near the beach.

When to Go
The best time to visit Negombo is during the dry season from December to April, when weather is most favorable for beach activities and boat tours. The monsoon season (May to November) brings heavier rainfall. The town has fewer crowds outside major holidays. Evening beach walks are popular, especially near the old water park where locals gather to fly kites.

Mid-range choices include Woodside Villa and Dion's Guest House (Rs 4,000 per night), both offering AC and WiFi. The three Jetwing resorts dominate the upper end. Food and Drink
Local curry houses offer authentic meals for Rs 200. Roti Talk on Porutota Rd serves excellent local roti and chutney for Rs 200-300, with curry and rice for Rs 700-900. Lords on Porutota Rd (opposite Jetwing Blue) offers Sri Lankan curry and rice plus pizzas for around Rs 2,000 per meal, with cultural shows on Wednesdays. Koththamalli inside Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions is the only vegetarian/vegan restaurant in town, with most dishes under Rs 1,000. Fresh king coconut is cheap and ubiquitous along the beach strip. Fresh toddy can be found if you search around. The three Jetwing resorts offer dining for about Rs 3,000 per meal. Local seafood—fish, lobsters, crabs, prawns, and shellfish—is fresh and plentiful, with crabs sourced from the local lagoons.

Things to Do
Boat rides in the shallow waters of Negombo lagoon can be arranged through hotels and tour agencies. The wide sandy beach is worth walking, especially in the evening when hundreds of locals gather near the old water park to fly kites, and vendors sell cheap deep-fried snacks. Two diving centres operate along the main beach strip with roughly 30 dive sites accessible by boat. The famous Negombo fish market ("Lellama") at the north end of the lagoon holds daily fish auctions where tourists can meet fishermen and arrange fishing trips. Handicraft and gift shopping is available, with local cinnamon and vanilla still sold at roadside shops despite the decline of Negombo's once-major cinnamon trade.

Stay Safe
The main roads and beach areas have their share of touts, including taxi drivers, souvenir sellers, and beggars who will approach tourists. One man walks the beach with a monkey on a rope, trained to grab hold of tourists' legs—give this a wide berth. The beaches themselves are quite dirty due to rubbish and stray dog waste, though the sheer size of the beach strip makes walking worthwhile. Use standard urban precautions for valuables.
