Overview

Nan is a lesser-known Thai town offering an authentic alternative to tourist-heavy destinations. Steeped in Lanna Thai culture and the Sukhothai kingdom heritage, it features centuries-old temples, traditional teak houses, and access to Si Nan National Park.

Before you go

Food

Night market on Pha Kong Rd offers best value (20-50 baht). Fresh noodles and Isaan food stalls provide cheap meals throughout the day.

Language

Thai is the primary language. English is limited outside tourist areas and hotels. Some vendors, like Luang at the night market, speak French.

Money

ATMs are available throughout town on Sumonthewarat Rd, Anantaworrattidet Rd, and Sumon Thevarat Rd. Thai Baht (THB) is the local currency.

Safety

Nan is very safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply. Nan Hospital (1 Khaluang Rd) provides 24-hour emergency services.

Transport

Nan Airport (NNT) has daily flights to Bangkok Don Mueang via Nok Air and Thai Air Asia. The main bus station is at the southern edge of town with connections to Chiang Mai (5 hours) and Bangkok.

Weather

Best visited November-February (cool season). Boat races occur September-October when water levels peak.
