Before you go
Food
Kerala meals with multiple curries are standard. Non-vegetarian food is common here—fish fry and curries are everywhere. Toddy shops near the 130 junction offer local kallu (coconut toddy) with non-veg dishes.
Language
Malayalam is the local language. Many locals understand Hindi and English, especially in hotels and shops. 'Muvattupuzha' is often shortened to 'Muvattupusha' for non-Keralites who struggle with the 'zha' pronunciation.
Transport
Auto rickshaws are the main local transport. Always negotiate and fix the fare before the ride, as meters are rarely used.
Water
Use bottled water for drinking. River bathing is popular but exercise caution as currents can be unpredictable.
