Why go?
Mui Ne is a transformed fishing village turned resort destination along a 15 km stretch of Phan Thiet Bay in Southern Vietnam. The area draws visitors for its unique red and white sand dunes, strong winds ideal for kite surfing, and fresh seafood at budget-friendly local restaurants. Unlike more chaotic Vietnamese beach destinations, Mui Ne offers a laid-back resort atmosphere with most amenities concentrated along a single main road, Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, where English and Russian menus are common due to heavy tourism from both markets.
Getting in
Phan Thiet, approximately 10-20 km west, serves as the main transport hub for Mui Ne. The nearest major airports are in Cam Ranh and Ho Chi Minh City, with Russian tour operators running charter buses to Ham Tien and Mui Ne from both. Open tour buses connect Mui Ne to other destinations in Vietnam. The journey from Ho Chi Minh City covers roughly 220 km northeast.
Getting around
Mui Ne and Ham Tien are easy to navigate on foot or by motorbike since the entire resort area follows one long strip along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street. Even-numbered addresses sit on the sea side of the street while odd numbers are on the inland side. Xe om (motorbike taxis) are readily available for shorter trips. Bicycle is viable for reaching nearby attractions like the Red Sand Dunes (30-45 minutes) though the White Sand Dunes are too far for comfortable cycling, especially in summer.
When to go
The windy season from November to March creates ideal conditions for kite surfing, the area's primary draw. The dry "winter" season (November to February) offers the best weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The monsoon season runs from May through October when wind direction shifts from northeast to southwest and fishing boats move to shelter on the other side of Mui Ne headland. Sand migration along the coast varies seasonally, so those seeking sandy beaches should research current conditions before booking, particularly after tropical storm season.
Where to stay
Over 200 accommodations line Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street from 2 to 98, with options spanning every price category starting from 100,000 dong. The lower numbered addresses in Ham Tien represent the main tourist section while higher addresses near Huynh Thuc Khang and Mui Ne ward tend to be smaller, cheaper, and more integrated with local life. Many "beachside" resorts actually face concrete breakwaters rather than sandy beaches due to seasonal sand migration. Budget travelers can find bargains on the inland side of the road though accessing the beach may require passing through resort security. Note that hotels book up well in advance during Tet (Vietnamese New Year).
Food and drink
Seafood restaurants surround every resort area in Ham Tien and Mui Ne, serving fresh, well-prepared dishes in friendly settings. The best local restaurants require a motorbike ride outside the tourist district. Bo Ke Street near the fishing village offers BBQ seafood cafes with very cheap prices and wide selection, with scallops in onion and garlic sauce as a local specialty. Joe's cafe operates 24/7 on Nguyen Dinh Chieu with Western fare including pancakes with maple syrup (50,000 dong with coffee) and sandwiches with fries (60,000 dong). Nightlife centers around Dragon Beach with its two dance floors, pool, and sea access, plus Nirvana Beach Club offering cocktails during happy hour (18:00-21:00) with seconds free.
Things to do
The sand dunes form the main tourist attraction: the Red Sand Dunes (Doi Cat) sit about 10 km north of Mui Ne fishing town and can be reached by taxi (170,000 dong each way), xe om, or bicycle (30-45 minutes). The White Sand Dunes (Doi Cat Trang) lie approximately 45 km northeast of Ham Tien and require a motorbike or organized tour with 4WD/quad vehicles. Day tours sold by agents cost US$7-13 and typically visit the fishing village, Fairy Stream, and both dune sites. Kite surfing lessons and rentals are available throughout the resort strip, with many mid-range and top-end resorts offering swimming pools (day use from 80,000 dong). The Fairy Stream winds through bamboo forests and red sandstone formations with a small waterfall perfect for a refreshing bath.
Safety
Several safety considerations apply to Mui Ne visitors. Sand flies on the beach can cause allergic reactions; applying anti-mosquito spray on legs before beach visits minimizes bites. Mosquitoes are a significant nuisance, especially in evenings, so insect repellent or long-sleeved clothing is recommended along with mosquito killer rackets (around 50,000 dong) available locally. The sea can be quite rough with large waves and strong rip tides; after 11:00 large waves typically emerge. Swimming is best in early mornings when water is flat and free of kite surfers. Tourist pickpocketing occurs at the Red Sand Dunes, so visitors should secure valuables and avoid keeping money or electronics visible. Reports of missing laundry items have been noted, so check clothes immediately upon collection.
Connectivity
Free Wi-Fi is available in most hostels, restaurants, and cafes throughout Mui Ne and Ham Tien. For mobile data, Vietnamese SIM cards are widely available for purchase.
Budget
Budget travelers can find guesthouses starting from 100,000-150,000 dong for basic rooms. Street food and local seafood restaurants offer meals from 50,000 dong. Day tours to the sand dunes cost US$7-13. Transportation by xe om or bicycle keeps local travel affordable. Swimming pool day access at upscale resorts costs around 80,000 dong, or guests can pose as hotel visitors and purchase drinks to use facilities. A motorbike rental allows exploration of the area at one's own pace.
Day trips
Mui Ne serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions. The Red Sand Dunes can be visited independently by bicycle or motorbike, taking 30-45 minutes from the main resort strip, or by taxi (170,000 dong each way). The White Sand Dunes require organized transport due to the 45 km distance. Phan Thiet city, 10-20 km west, offers the Poshanu Cham Tower and local fish sauce production facilities. The fishing harbor at Mui Ne proper provides insight into traditional Vietnamese coastal life, with colorful boats moored in the bay during the dry season.
Etiquette
When accessing beaches from inland-side budget accommodations, visitors may encounter resistance from resort guards who jealously guard lounge chairs and palapas, though the beach itself is public. Bargaining is expected at markets and with independent vendors. Tipping is not customary in local establishments but appreciated in upscale resorts. Dress modestly when visiting the Cham Tower religious site.
Go next
North along the coast leads to Da Lat (French hill station with spring climate), Nha Trang (popular beach town 4-5 hours away), and Quy Nhon (less touristy alternative with beautiful beaches). West toward Phan Thiet (regional capital and transport hub, 10-20 km away) connects to bus and train networks. South and east routes lead to Ho Chi Minh City (220 km, accessible by bus or train), and Vung Tau (popular local beach escape from HCMC with connections to the Mekong Delta).
