Overview

Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain at 3776m, a near-perfectly symmetrical stratovolcano that has been a sacred symbol for centuries, immortalized in Hokusai's 36 Views of Mt. Fuji.

Before you go

Accommodation

Mountain huts from 7th station: ¥5250/night per person in cramped shared space. Reservations strongly recommended. Tents not allowed.

Money

All prices in Japanese yen. Mountain prices rise with altitude: drinks ¥400 at summit, meals ¥1000, snacks ¥250. Toilets ¥100-200.

Safety

Altitude sickness and sunburn risks. Hypothermia possible even in summer. Average 4 deaths and 12+ injuries annually. Do not climb out of season without full alpine gear.

Transport

Direct buses from Tokyo Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Fifth Station; Odakyu train to Gotemba. Schedules sharply reduced outside July-August.

Weather

35°C at foot vs 7°C at summit during summer. Winter climbs can reach -30°C. Clouds obscure the peak most of the time; winter visibility is best.
