Before you go
Connectivity
No mobile phone coverage exists within most of the park. Inform someone of your plans before entering remote areas.
Money
Cash preferred at basic campsites and remote areas; cards accepted at visitor centres in Wanaka and Haast.
Packing
Bring all food, water, and supplies you need—facilities are extremely limited. Basic campsites have pit toilets only; Routeburn Flats has no toilets.
Safety
Fill up with fuel before entering the park—nearest petrol is in Wanaka, Makarora, or Haast. Carry emergency supplies and let someone know your plans.
Transport
Rent a 4WD in Wanaka or Queenstown for access to remote trailheads like Mount Aspiring and Routeburn; standard vehicles suffice for Haast Highway attractions.
Weather
Expect rain year-round on the West Coast and freezing temperatures even in summer valleys. Pack layers, waterproofs, and warm insulation.
