Culture
The Grand Mosque is not open to non-Muslims. Mali is a predominantly Muslim country; dress modestly and respect prayer times.
Money
West African CFA franc (XOF) is used. Bargaining is expected at the harbour and markets.
Safety
Persistent touts selling tours and souvenirs are common; firmly decline or ignore. Violent crime is not typical.
Transport
Mopti is a transit hub: buses to Sevare and Bamako, river boats to Djenné and Timbuktu (June–December). Sevare airport has no commercial flights.
Weather
River travel is only reliable from June to December when the Niger is high. The hot, dry season (March–May) can be intense.
