Bamako
Bamako is the largest city in Mali and one of the largest in West Africa, straddling the Niger River. It offers a mix of colonial history, vibrant markets, music, and easy access to nearby attractions like Siby.
Atlas entry
Mopti
Mopti is Mali's most important river port and the practical gateway to the country's legendary destinations: Djenné, Timbuktu, and Dogon Country. The bustling harbour filled with pirogues gives a real sense of Sahel commerce and culture.
Atlas entry
Ségou
Ségou is Mali's second city and one of its most important ports on the Niger River. Unlike the capital Bamako, Ségou offers a more laid-back atmosphere with impressive colonial architecture, traditional bogolan (mud cloth) workshops, and the celebrated Festival sur le Niger in late January/early February.
Atlas entry
Timbuktu
Timbuktu is a legendary city that has become a metaphor for distant, exotic lands. Once the capital of the Mali Empire and home to Mansa Musa, regarded as the richest person in history, it was a major trading hub linking sub-Saharan Africa with North Africa and Europe.
