Overview
Mesquita is the newest municipality in the Greater Rio metropolitan area, having been separated from Nova Iguaçu in 1999. It serves as one of the main transit corridors for commuters traveling between Nova Iguaçu and Rio de Janeiro.

Transport
Mesquita is primarily accessed via the Japeri railway line from Central do Brasil station in Rio. Buses and vans also connect from Terminal Américo Fontenelle.
