Overview
Meru Betiri is one of Java's most remote national parks, protecting 50,000 hectares of coastal forest and beaches where four species of sea turtles nest every night of the year. Sukamade beach, 97km southwest of Banyuwangi, offers the rare chance to witness giant turtles emerging from the surf to lay eggs under moonlight.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile phone coverage is limited or unavailable in this remote area. Inform family of your plans before entering the park.
Conservation
Turtle eggs are still illegally sold in East Java and poaching occurs. Rangers work 24/7 with insufficient staff. Donations to support their efforts are genuinely appreciated.
Money
Carry cash from Banyuwangi or Kalibaru as there are no ATMs at Sukamade. Park fees accepted in cash; homestay costs Rp 80,000.
Safety
No medical facilities exist in the park area. Bring supplies including food, water, and any medications. River crossings require caution during wet season.
Transport
Only 4WD vehicles can reach Sukamade; hire a driver in Banyuwangi (Rp 400,000/day plus petrol). Public transport chain exists for budget travelers but takes most of a day.
Weather
Heavy rains December-March make roads impassable and rivers dangerous to cross. Dry season April-November is optimal for visiting.
