Why go?

Banyuwangi sits at Java's eastern tip, best known as the ferry gateway to Bali at Ketapang harbor. But this East Java town has emerged as a destination in its own right, serving as the main access point for the stunning Ijen volcanic crater, three national parks, and world-renowned surf breaks at G-Land. The town offers a more relaxed, authentic Javanese experience compared to Bali's tourist crowds, with affordable local food, volcanic landscapes, and turtle conservation beaches within reach.

Get in

Blimbingsari Airport (IATA: BWX) won the 2022 Aga Khan Award for Architecture and handles flights from Jakarta via Batik Air, Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, and NAM Air; from Surabaya via Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air; and from Kuala Lumpur via Citilink. The main ferry terminal at Ketapang connects to Gilimanuk in Bali with frequent crossings. Sri Tanjung bus terminal, 2 km south of Ketapang port, receives buses from Surabaya (285 km, 6 hours).

Get around

Yellow bemos and shuttle buses run from Ketapang ferry terminal to the city center (Sri Tanjung/Brawijaya bus terminal) and surrounding areas. Becaks (horse-cart pedicabs) are widely available but always bargain on price. Independent travelers can hire private jeeps with drivers for Ijen crater trips or national park exploration. Surfers heading to G-Land can take a bus from Sri Tanjung terminal to Benculuk (1 hour), then another to Grajagan (30 minutes).

When to go

The dry season from April to October offers the best conditions for visiting Ijen crater and national parks. The Ijen volcano is most dramatic at sunrise when blue flames flicker alongside the turquoise crater lake. G-Land surf season runs from April to October with the famous reef breaks operating. Avoid the wet season (November-March) when trails become slippery and some park access may be restricted.
