Overview

Maxcanú is a small city of about 12,000 inhabitants in western Yucatán with over 90% indigenous Maya population. It offers colonial charm with a historic church of San Miguel Arcángel and serves as a practical base for exploring major Mayan archaeological sites including Uxmal, Oxkintok, and Kabah.

Maya is widely spoken (over 90% of population) alongside Spanish. English is limited outside tourist areas.

Moto-taxis are abundant and cheap for local trips. Car taxis available for longer distances. Rental car recommended for visiting multiple archaeological sites. Tren Maya has a stop 3 km northeast of town.
