Overview
Matsu Islands are a remote National Scenic Area off China's Fujian coast, administered by the Republic of China and forming the front lines between ROC and PRC. The islands offer unique Cold War history, traditional Fujian-style architecture distinct from Taiwan proper, and the famous Blue Tears bioluminescent algae bloom from April to July.

Before you go
Culture
Locals prefer being called Matsunese or Chinese rather than Taiwanese. The Republic of China is the preferred term for the country.
Money
Very few ATMs on the islands and no official money exchange facilities for travelers. Many shops accept Chinese renminbi but often at unfavorable exchange rates.
Safety
Do not wander off paved roads due to old unmarked minefields. Avoid sensitive areas after dark including coastal areas and military installations. Obey all military personnel orders.
Transport
Nangan is the main hub with the largest airport and all inter-island ferries stopping there. Google Maps now works for navigation on Matsu Islands.
Weather
Blue Tears bioluminescence is best April to July on days with light southern wind. Most attractions including former military sites are free to visit.
