Overview
Massawa is a historic Red Sea port with Ottoman coral architecture, narrow alleyways, and an ancient mosque on the island of Batsi. The city serves as a gateway to the pristine Dahlak Islands and Green Island, offering excellent snorkeling and diving in turquoise waters.

Internet connectivity is limited throughout Eritrea. Mobile coverage may be available but slow.

Decompression chamber available in Massawa for diving emergencies. Wait 1-2 days after diving before flying or traveling to high altitude Asmara.
Money
Eritrean nakfa (ERN) is the local currency. US dollars cash is sometimes accepted in tourist establishments but at poor rates.
Safety
Dengue fever risk exists along the coast. Bring mosquito repellent and nets. Sun protection is essential as quality sunscreen is not reliably available.
Transport
Massawa has no operating commercial flights as of 2023. Taxis needed for Gurgusum Beach (14 km north). Islands are walkable.
Water
Drink bottled mineral water. Sea-salt from Massawa makes a local souvenir that hosts in Asmara will appreciate.
