Overview
Maroneia is a historic village in Western Thrace with ancient roots dating to when it was one of the wealthiest towns of the ancient world, alongside nearby Abdera and Mesimvria. The settlement spreads at the foot of Mount Ismaros, surrounded by olive groves and mountainous landscapes.

Beautiful uncrowded sandy beaches stretch from Fanari to Platanitis, including Proftis Ilias, Alkyona, Mesi, Kageles, and Molyvoti.
History
Ancient ruins include a Hellenistic theatre, Mesimvria archaeological site, Cyclop's Cave mentioned in Argonautica, and the megalithic gate of ancient Ismara.
Money
Greece uses the Euro (EUR). ATMs may be limited in the small village; withdraw cash in Komotini or Alexandroupolis before visiting.
Transport
Maroneia is reached by road from Komotini (25 km north) or Alexandroupolis (70 km west). No train or direct bus station in the village; driving is most practical.
Weather
Best visited May-June or September-October. Summer can be very hot for exploring archaeological sites.
