Overview
Mariestad is a small historic town of about 15,000 inhabitants on the shore of lake Vänern, Sweden's largest freshwater lake. Founded in 1583 by Duke Karl (later King Karl IX), the town played an important role in Swedish religious history as a Protestant center.

Mariestad Hospital has no emergency room; emergencies are sent to Kärnsjukhuset in Skövde. One of two pharmacies is Apoteket Lejonet on Österlånggatan 15, open Saturdays.

ATMs available at Nya Torget, Esplanaden, Nygatan, and ICA Oxen. Sweden is largely cashless but carry some SEK for smaller establishments.
Transport
Regional trains (Kunnekulletåget) connect Mariestad to Sjötorp. Västtrafik buses serve the wider municipality. Central Mariestad is walkable.
