Why Go?
Linköping is Sweden's fifth-largest municipality with roughly 167,000 inhabitants, yet retains a cozy small-town atmosphere largely because low-rise buildings dominate the skyline—a legacy of the nearby military airfield. Founded during the Middle Ages, it ranks among Sweden's oldest cities and serves as the clerical and administrative heart of Östergötland county. The university (founded 1969) infuses the city with youthful energy day and night, while historic sites include a 12th-century cathedral, a 13th-century castle, and Gamla Linköping, an open-air museum with 20+ museums where staff dress in period costume.
Getting In
Linköping City Airport (IATA: LPI) offers flights to Amsterdam via KLM but lacks direct shuttles to central Linköping—options include taxi or local bus. Skavsta Airport, 100 km northeast in Nyköping, is served by Wizz Air and connected by Flygbussarna shuttle (90 minutes, departs from Resecentrum). Linköping sits on the E4 highway between Stockholm and Malmö. Trains connect to Stockholm (2-3 hours), Gothenburg, and Malmö. Bus operators include Swebus Express (most frequent, sometimes hourly to Stockholm), FlixBus, and Nettbuss/Bus4you.
Getting Around
Linköping is compact enough to explore on foot, with the main hill crest hosting public buildings, the library (built 1998 with collections dating to pre-Gutenberg), and the cathedral. The main street Storgatan slopes from a minor hill down to Stortorget square and across Stångebro bridge. For longer distances, taxis are available via TaxiKurir or Bolt apps with address-based routing and calculated pricing.
When to Go
Linköping experiences typical Swedish seasons: warm summers ideal for canal boat trips, outdoor swimming at Tinnerbäcksbadet, and visiting Gamla Linköping; cold winters with snow for atmospheric cathedral views and ghost walks at Ekenäs Castle. Summer months offer extended daylight hours and outdoor events. The Saturday Shopping Lunch promotion (12:00-15:00, around 80 kr) runs year-round at most restaurants.
