Overview
Mariana is one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial towns, founded in 1696 after gold was discovered along the Ribeirão Nossa Senhora do Carmo river. Known as 'Primeira Cidade' (First City), it was the first planned city in Minas Gerais and the state's first capital.

Transport
Buses connect Mariana to Belo Horizonte (2 hours) and Ouro Preto (30 minutes). The town center is walkable.
Weather
Dry season (May-September) is best for sightseeing. Winters are cool and dry at Caraça Natural Reserve.
