Overview
Marettimo is the wildest and most remote of the Aegadian Islands, rising as a rugged limestone outcrop some 40 km west of Trapani. As part of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, it offers crystalline waters, dramatic hiking trails, and a blissfully car-free village where time seems to stand still.

Before you go
Accommodation
Book accommodation well in advance for summer visits—the island's small capacity fills quickly. Most options are near the port; self-catering apartments offer flexibility for longer stays.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is limited and unreliable across most of the island. WiFi availability varies by accommodation. Embrace the disconnection or plan offline activities.
Etiquette
The island is small and traditional. Dress modestly when walking through the village; remove hats and speak quietly near churches. Greet shopkeepers and restaurant staff—small gestures are appreciated in this tight-knit community.
Money
Cash is essential on Marettimo—no ATMs on the island. Bring sufficient euros from Trapani. Cards accepted at some accommodation and better restaurants, but alimentari and smaller establishments are cash-only.
Packing
Pack everything you need—shops are limited. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, swimwear, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, and any medications. A headlamp is useful for evening walks.
Safety
Marettimo is very safe with virtually no crime. Hiking trails can be steep and poorly marked—wear sturdy shoes, carry water, and avoid hiking alone. No lifeguards at beaches; check sea conditions before swimming.
Transport
Marettimo is reached only by boat from Trapani (1 hour by hydrofoil, longer by ferry). Liberty Lines runs year-round hydrofoils; Siremar operates occasional ferries. Book ahead in summer, especially weekends.
Weather
May-September offers warm weather and reliable ferries. July-August are busiest. Winter brings reduced boat service and some closures, but dramatic scenery and solitude appeal to resilient travellers.
