Overview
Mapimi is a hauntingly atmospheric ghost town in the Chihuahuan Desert, once rich with silver, gold, and other minerals before exhaustion drove most residents away in the early 20th century. Today it offers a rare blend of historic mining heritage, UNESCO-recognized sites, and genuinely mysterious experiences like the Zone of Silence where radio signals fail.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile phone signals may be unreliable, particularly near the Zone of Silence where radio communication reportedly fails. Plan accordingly and inform contacts of potential communication gaps.
Money
Mexican pesos (M$) are the local currency. Cash is essential as card acceptance is limited in this small desert town. Budget approximately M$400-700 for accommodation, M$120-180 for mine admission.
Packing
Bring sun protection, ample water, and sturdy walking shoes. The desert environment demands layers—hot daytime temperatures drop significantly at night.
Transport
No direct buses reach Mapimi; take a bus to Bermejillo and taxi the final leg for approximately M$300. A rental car is strongly recommended for visiting the Biosphere Reserve or Zone of Silence.
