Overview

Mandu is the "City of Joy" (Shadiabad) — a ruined medieval citadel sprawling 10km long and 15km wide atop a 634m plateau in central Madhya Pradesh. Between 1401 and 1561 it served as a frontier outpost and pleasure palace for Muslim rulers of central and north India.

Culture

Mandu is the only place in India with abundant baobab trees (African origin), locally called mandu ka imli. The site reflects 1,000 years of Islamic and Hindu history.

Money

Cash is preferred for small purchases and local eateries. ATMs are limited in Mandu; withdraw sufficient cash in Indore before visiting.

Packing

Carry comfortable walking shoes, water, sun protection, and a flashlight for dark interior chambers. Modest clothing is recommended for visiting mosques.

Transport

Indore is the nearest major transport hub (95 km) with airport and railway station. Buses and taxis connect Indore to Mandu. Local transport within Mandu relies on auto-rickshaws.

Weather

Visit during monsoon (July-September) for filled lakes and romantic atmosphere, or winter (October-March) for pleasant sightseeing weather. Avoid summer (April-June) due to extreme heat.
