Understand

Indore sits at 553m altitude on the Malwa Plateau, where the Saraswati and Khan rivulets meet at the 18th-century Sangamnath temple (also called Indreshwar), giving the city its name. The city was shaped by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, one of India's greatest rulers, who took charge of Indore after being widowed in her teens and ruled for 220 years through the Holkar dynasty. Today Indore combines its trading heritage (cotton cloth, bangles) with modern industry through satellite towns Pithampur and Dewas, while pioneering privatization initiatives like India's first toll road and private telephone network (Airtel).

Indore Junction railway station provides regular train connections. The city lies 593 km from Mumbai and 807 km from Delhi, both reachable by daily Air India flights. Road travel is convenient via National Highway 3 (NH-3).
