Why Go

Magnetic Island is a 7 km by 5 km island directly off Townsville in Central Queensland, with over half its land area protected as National Park. About 2000 residents spread across four small villages—Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay, Arcadia, and Horseshoe Bay—along the east coast. The island features 25 km of walking tracks, numerous beaches and bays, koalas living wild in the trees, and WWII fort ruins with panoramic views. Budget travelers typically favor Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay, which cater to pub-going and jetskiing tourists.

Getting In

Magnetic Island is only accessible by boat from Townsville, which lies 8 kilometers away and has a well-served airport. Two ferry services operate from Ross Street, South Townsville, both arriving at the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal. Ferries take approximately 30 minutes. Adult passengers pay $17 one way, students $12.50, and children and pensioners $9.40; car transport starts at $231 return. The Airport Shuttle runs between Townsville Airport, city, selected hotels, and the Sunferries Ferry Terminal for $10 each way (phone +61 7-4775-5544, 8:30AM-6PM). Some resorts include return ferry tickets with accommodation bookings.

Safety

Box jellyfish stinger season runs November to May; swimmers should use stinger nets available at patrolled beaches like Horseshoe Bay and Alma Bay. Some walking tracks require attention to tide times—Balding Bay beach becomes inaccessible unless you swim when the tide comes in late afternoon. Sun protection is essential year-round.
