Getting In
The nearest airport is Proserpine Airport (PPP), also known as Whitsunday Coast Airport, located about 40 minutes drive from Airlie Beach. Most visitors fly into Proserpine from major Australian cities. The Abel Point Marina is the departure point for boats to the Whitsunday Islands and is a 15-minute walk from Shute Harbour Road along a renovated seaside boardwalk.

Getting Around
Buses meet arriving flights at Proserpine Airport and cost a flat $15 per person one-way, with tickets purchased at a booth inside the arrival gate. Taxis are also available at the airport and typically match the bus price at $15 per person. The drive to Airlie Beach takes about 40 minutes, and drivers will drop passengers at their hostel or hotel door. Within Airlie Beach, everything is walkable along Shute Harbour Road.

When to Go
Airlie Beach has a tropical climate typical of Queensland. The peak season aligns with Australia's summer months (December-February), when weather is warmest but also wetter. The shoulder seasons (March-May, September-November) offer good weather with fewer crowds. The Saturday morning waterfront market operates year-round with locally produced foods and souvenirs.

Where to Stay
Airlie Beach is famous for its hostels concentrated along Shute Harbour Road. Nomads Airlie Beach (354 Shute Harbour Rd) offers dorms from $30-34 in 7 acres of tropical gardens. Beaches Backpackers (356 Shute Harbour Rd) is connected to one of the liveliest bars and has dorms from $20-24. Magnums Backpackers (366 Shute Harbour Rd) connects to a food court, bar, and club with dorms from $24-26. For a quieter option, Backpackers by the Bay (12 Hermitage Drive) is a 5-minute walk up some steps and won the 2004 Whitsunday Tourism award.

Airlie Beach has restaurants ranging from budget to upscale. For foodies, Deja Vu at Water's Edge Resort and Capers at the Airlie Beach Hotel are reliable options. Budget travelers can head to Morocco's, Beaches, or Magnums for good pub-style meals, with some sailing trips including meals. The Saturday morning waterfront market offers locally produced foods. Day Trips
Cedar Creek Falls is a scenic waterfall hike accessible by car. Dingo Beach and Hideaway Bay are within 30 minutes drive and offer quieter beach experiences away from the younger backpacker crowd. Quad biking and horse riding are also available in the area. The Whitsunday Islands themselves require overnight or multi-day sailing trips rather than day visits.

This hostel is near the Airlie Lagoon plus lots of restaurants and cafes. Every second night they have a $10 dinner such as roast chicken, as well as movie nights, quiz nights and pool volleyball.

Backpackers by the bay
An excellent choice for something smaller, and is the 2004 Whitsunday Tourism award winner. There is a very good kitchen for cooking, a small pool, bar, tables and sofas on a relaxed terrace looking into the harbour (under construction for a new marina.) The staff are friendly and offer helpful advice, the dorms sleep four, are kept clean and artistically decorated. You can sleep in your car or van on the hostel's private parking space and pay $10 to use all the facilities. There is a bus stop just outside for the motionally challenged, or for trips back to the Proserpine airport.

Beaches Backpackers
Right in the centre of town has many dorm beds and is connected to one of the liveliest bar in town. A normal dorm sleeps eight, has its own shower and toilet, fridge and TV. These are fairly clean, depending on your co-habitees. The bar (open to everyone) has live music every Friday and Saturday singing teeny songs to cater for the large young British and Irish contingent of visitors. Nomads Mad Card Holders receive a discount. Paid Wi-Fi.
