Why go?
Madikeri (also called Mercara) is the capital of Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka, a lush hill station sitting between Mangalore and Mysore at roughly 1,000m elevation. The town serves as the gateway to coffee plantations, spice estates, and waterfall hikes in the western ghats. Unlike busier tourist hubs, Madikeri retains a small-town feel with traditional Kodagu culture, pork-centric cuisine rare in India, and easy access to natural attractions like Abbey Falls and Talakaveri.

Understand
Madikeri's modern history links to the Haleri kings who ruled Kodagu from 1600-1834 AD. King Mudduraja built the fort here in 1681, and the settlement was originally called Muddurajakeri before becoming Madikeri. Kodagu became part of British India after 1834. The traditional Kodagu sari is worn in reverse style, and older women still follow this custom. The Haleri capital was Haleri village near Madikeri.

Get in
Madikeri has no airport; the nearest airports are Mangalore (120 km) and Mysore (110 km). The town sits on the Kushalnagar-Mysore road. State-run KSRTC buses and private buses connect Madikeri to Mysore, Mangalore, and Bangalore. The journey from Bangalore takes roughly 6-7 hours by bus. Madikeri bus stand is centrally located near the main market area.

Walking within the town center is manageable, but venturing 1 km from the main road opens up pleasant trails through coffee estates with the scent of fresh coffee in the air. Raja's Seat is walkable from central Madikeri, or take a rickshaw for ₹15-20.

When to go
The best time to visit Madikeri is October to March when weather is cool and pleasant (15-25°C). The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rainfall creating spectacular waterfall volumes but may disrupt travel. Talakaveri sees the Kaveri River overflow its banks annually on 17-18 October, a significant pilgrimage event. Summer months (April-May) can be warm but still manageable at hill station elevation.

Safety
Madikeri is generally a safe hill station town. Standard precautions apply—secure valuables and avoid isolated areas after dark. Road driving can be challenging on mountain curves, especially during monsoon. Abbey Falls and other waterfall sites have steep rocky areas; bathing is prohibited at Abbey Falls due to the rocky steep valley below.

Etiquette
Dress modestly when visiting temples like Omkareshwara—cover shoulders and legs. The traditional Kodagu sari style differs from standard Indian draping, reflecting local culture. Remove shoes before entering temple premises. Ask permission before photographing religious ceremonies or local people in traditional dress.
