Why Go

Madaba is a small town of about 80,000 people, roughly 25 km south of Amman on the King's Highway. The town is best known as the location of the "Madaba Map", a 6th-century Byzantine mosaic depicting Jerusalem and the Holy Land—the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the region. Most of Madaba's visitor infrastructure catering to pilgrims and tourists is run by the Franciscans, and the town has a significant Christian minority (about 10%) in an otherwise predominantly Muslim country. For backpackers, Madaba offers biblical history, excellent mosaics, and a convenient base for visiting Mt. Nebo and the Dead Sea without Amman's crowds.

Getting In

Madaba sits on the King's Highway, approximately 25 km from Queen Alia International Airport and 35-40 km from the Dead Sea, making it an ideal first or last stop in Jordan. Most visitors arrive by taxi from Amman or the airport. Local buses heading north or south along the King's Highway stop at the bus station in the east of town.

Getting Around

Madaba is a very walkable town, but a taxi from downtown to the bus station costs 1-2 JD. Local taxis operate at a standard fixed fare of 1 JD per trip—always agree on the price before boarding. Uber is also available within the city and is a good option for trips to Mt. Nebo (around 5 JD from Madaba center as of February 2019).

When to Go

The best time to visit Madaba is during spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when temperatures are mild. Summer months can be extremely hot, while winter brings cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Early morning visits to archaeological sites are recommended to avoid crowds and the midday sun.

Haret Jdoudna, set in a restored Ottoman house on the main street, offers excellent Jordanian mezze, mashawi (Arabic barbecue), and pizza, with a rooftop patio ideal for sunset. King Mesha Restaurant near the Archaeological Park provides a lovely atmosphere at reasonable prices. The Mariam Hotel's rooftop restaurant offers an open buffet dinner for 8 JD with panoramic city views.

Things to Do

The main draw is Madaba's extraordinary collection of Byzantine mosaics. The Basilica of St. George (Church of the Map) houses the famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land (1 JD entry). The Madaba Archaeological Park (5 JD combined ticket) is the highlight, showcasing extensive ancient mosaics alongside the Madaba Museum and Apostles Church. The Shrine of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist includes a climbable bell tower offering panoramic views of the town. Outside town, Mount Nebo (9 km northwest, 2 JD) is where Moses reportedly viewed the Promised Land. The Fortress of Machaerus (30 km southwest, 1 JD) is the biblical site of John the Baptist's execution. Hammamat Ma'in features natural hot springs and waterfalls about 30 km south.

Go Next

From Madaba's bus station (east of town), local buses run north to Amman and south along the King's Highway. Daily tour buses depart from outside the Mariam Hotel toward Petra via the scenic King's Highway, stopping at Wadi Mujib and Kerak. Wadi Rum lies about an hour south of Petra. Dead Sea resorts are 35-40 km north. Kerak, home to a Crusader castle, is another historic stop along the highway. Dana Nature Reserve offers hiking opportunities within a local village setting.

Etiquette

As a predominantly Christian town with significant pilgrim traffic, Madaba is relatively relaxed compared to more conservative areas. However, visitors should dress modestly when visiting churches and religious sites. During the call to prayer, some businesses may briefly pause. The local Bedouin population around Madaba maintains traditional hospitality customs.
