Overview
The MacDonnell Ranges are a spectacular barrier of rugged mountains that divide Alice Springs, with Heavitree Gap providing dramatic entry from the south. The ranges offer world-class outback experiences: 223km of the Larapinta Trail, 4WD tracks to ghost towns like Arltunga, and accessible gorges like Simpsons Gap and Trephina Gorge.

Camping fees start at $7.70 per family per night. Backcountry camping on the Larapinta Trail requires permits. Ross River Resort offers camp sites with facilities.

No public transport reaches the ranges; self-drive or organized tour required. Vehicle access is good via sealed and unsealed roads. A sealed bike path leads from Alice Springs.
