Overview
Loreto is a quiet Pacific coast town with deep historical roots as the first Spanish settlement in Baja California. Founded by Jesuits in 1697, it offers access to some of the world's best whale watching in the Sea of Cortez, excellent sport fishing, and nearby mountain missions.

History
First Spanish settlement in Baja California, founded 1697 by Jesuits. Mission of our Lady of Loreto started El Camino Real. Nearby missions include San Javier and San Bruno ruins.

Mexican pesos (MXN) accepted everywhere. US dollars taken at some hotels and tour operators. ATMs available downtown. M$3000 approximately US$150.
Transport
Daily flights from California, Phoenix, Dallas via Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. Highway 1 runs north-south through town. Walk downtown, taxi or bike for local transport.

Tropical desert climate. Best weather December-April (20-25°C). Summer hot and humid (34°C+). Hurricane season June-November.
