Overview
Loktak Lake is the world's only floating lake, famous for its phumdis—circular floating biomasses that support floating restaurants, cafeterias, and homestays. The lake has attracted visitors since the early 20th century for its combination of fresh air, silvery water, adjacent mountains, and good weather.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile network coverage may be limited on the lake itself and in remote shoreline areas.
Health
Mosquitoes may be common depending on season—bring repellent. Fish dishes from the lake are fresh and generally safe to eat.
Money
Cash payments are preferred at many establishments; some floating restaurants do not accept online payments. Cards may not be widely accepted in remote areas around the lake.
Safety
The lake is wider and deeper than it appears; do not attempt to swim across. Phumdis provide natural flotation but their surface is unstable. Stormy winds are rare but possible.
Transport
Boating is the primary transport on Loktak Lake—motor boats, oaring boats, or kayaking are available for hire.
