Why Go
Imphal is a quieter counterpoint to India's more visited cities, offering a rare glimpse into Manipuri culture and history. The city holds several world records: the oldest polo ground (Imphal Polo Ground), the world's only entirely women-run market (Ima Keithel with 3,000 female traders), and the world's tallest topiary plant (Samban Lei Sekpil at 50 feet). The 1944 WWII battle site draws history buffs, while Kangla Fort provides a window into the ancient Kangleipak kingdom that predated Manipur.

Get In
Bir Tikendrajit International Airport (IMF) is the third busiest in northeast India, with Air India and IndiGo serving flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Mumbai. Flights to Bangkok require a connection via Kolkata. The Imphal-Mandalay-Bangkok Route (1,813 km) is under construction to connect India with Myanmar, Thailand, and ASEAN nations. A new railway station is expected to open, improving connectivity further.

Get Around
Minivans operate common routes within the city and to neighboring villages. Tuk tuks are widely available for short trips, typically costing ₹10-20, though drivers frequently ask for ₹100 from tourists. Walking is feasible in the compact city center near Kangla Fort and the markets.

When to Go
October is the ideal time to visit Imphal, when monsoon rains have transformed the town into lush greenery. The winter months (November to February) can drop below freezing, while summers (May to August) are hot and humid with peak monsoon rains in June and July. Republic Day (January 26) and Independence Day (August 15) carry heightened security and risk of unrest.

Where to Stay
Budget travelers will find the most options near the bus stop. The government youth hostel north of Kangla next to the sports complex offers clean dorms for ₹150 and double rooms for ₹300, with a three-day stay limit. Hotel Gaylord provides the cheapest central option at ₹150 for a single with shared bathroom. Along MG Avenue, single rooms range from ₹300-400 at Hotel Avenue, Hotel City Heart, and White Palace. The Classic Hotel at North AOC offers free breakfast and Wi-Fi in a more comfortable setting.

Food and Drink
Manipuri cuisine centers on white rice with vegetable curry, cucumber, groundnut gravy, and onions. Bamboo shoot preparations are local delicacies, as is the fiery Umorok chilly. Budget restaurants cluster near the bus stop. Forage on DM College Road serves diverse international cuisine with fermented iced teas and soybean smoked pork (noon-8PM). Luxmi Kitchen in Sagolband offers genuine Manipuri food for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, though dishes are notably spicy. Alcohol is officially banned in Manipur, though it can be sourced through hotel staff or hidden restaurants behind the polo ground at double the list price. Sekmai is a strong traditional rice wine similar to baiju, often homemade.

Things to Do
Kangla Fort (entry ₹10 Indians, ₹50 foreigners) in the city center is the ancient fortified capital of Kangleipak, accessible only through the west gate. The site features an information center, gardens, traditional boats, a temple, and bicycle hire at ₹20/hour, though paths are short. The Manipur State Museum near the polo grounds (10AM-4:30PM) displays portraits of royalty, tribal costumes, polo equipment, and a 78-foot royal boat. Sambal-Lei-Sekpil garden in Sagolband holds a topiary recognized in the 1999 Guinness Book of Records at 50 feet with 35 steps. Matai Garden, 5 km north on NH-39, features well-shaped Duranta plants. Khongjom War Memorial commemorates Manipur's last resistance against British colonization in 1891.

Safety
Imphal city center is generally safe for travelers, but venturing to outskirts, rural areas, and mountainous regions—especially at night—is dangerous due to ongoing armed conflict involving underground groups (activists, rebels, traffickers). Police may forcibly return visitors attempting to travel beyond the city limits. Risk of violence increases on Indian national days (Republic Day, Independence Day) and during elections. Unlike much of India, Manipur's matrilineal culture means women experience greater freedom and are less likely to face unwanted attention.

Connectivity
English is widely understood in the tourism and public transport sectors. Learning basic Meitei phrases like greetings and thank you is appreciated. The government youth hostel offers Wi-Fi. For SIM cards and broader connectivity, options are limited compared to major Indian cities.

Lamphelpat is a suburban town reachable as a short trip. Moreh on the Myanmar border is accessible via state buses departing at 6:30AM, 7AM, and 1PM from the Manipur State Transport Bus Terminal. Silchar in Assam is another option for onward travel. The Imphal-Mandalay-Bangkok route will eventually make cross-border travel to Myanmar more streamlined.
