Why go?

Lezhë is a small northern Albanian city where national hero Skanderbeg died in 1468, leaving behind a mausoleum and castle with 360° views over the Adriatic. Development has brought seaside hotels to nearby Shëngjin beach (8 km away) and countryside guesthouses in the Mirdita region, making it a practical base for combining history, beach time, and mountain scenery without tourist crowds.

Getting in

Lezhë sits on the SH1 motorway between Shkodra (30 km north, €1.5 bus) and Tirana (50 km south, €2.5 bus), making it a natural transit stop. The bus station is just across the bridge to the center. A train station exists on Rruga e Stacionit but rail connections are limited. Furgons (group vans) to Rrëshen and Laç leave from the town center. The nearest beach at Shëngjin is about 8 km away.

Getting around

The entire city of Lezhë is quite walkable, with the castle, Skanderbeg Memorial, and cathedral all within the center. To reach Shëngjin beach or surrounding villages, take a group van (furgon) from the parking lot just past the bridge in the center of town. Buses to surrounding destinations leave from the main bus station.

See

Lezhë's main sight is Kalaja e Lezhës (Lezhë Castle), an age-old castle used by many civilizations with beautiful 360° views of the city, Adriatic Sea, and mountains. The castle costs 100 lek and is open daily 10:00-16:00, reached by a 20-minute walk from the Skanderbeg Memorial. The Skanderbeg Memorial houses the mausoleum of Albania's national hero, who died here in 1468 — it has served as both church and mosque at different points. Nearby, the free Ruins of Lissos (Lissus) offer unhindered exploration of remains ruled by many empires with a few English information panels.

Do

Take part in the annual Emigrant Day in mid-August, a major local celebration. Kayak along the Fan River or visit Kthelle Regional Nature Park off the A1 Motorway. The Gurra Domgjon natural water source offers fresh mountain water, and visitors can refresh themselves with cold pure water from the Mirdita highlands. Shëngjin Beach (Shëngjin) offers 7 km of coastline with clean waters, bars, restaurants, and public beach areas, plus communist-era bunkers to explore.

Buy

Look for Zadrimore textiles woven on traditional looms and ceramic pottery. The ethnographic museum (Muzeu etnografik) at Pallati i Kulturës Ded Ndue Lazri showcases local traditions, costume designs, handicrafts, and handmade dishes. The House of At Gjergj Fishta (1871-1940), a first-category cultural monument, honors the famous Albanian poet.
