Overview

Letterfrack is a tiny village of about 200 people on the Connemara coast, named for the speckled (fraic) quartzite rocks on the hillside (leitir). The main reasons to visit are Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey and Gardens.

Options range from hostel dorms (Connemara National Park Lodge, Old Monastery Hostel) to B&B doubles from €100 (Eriu Lodge) up to €250 at Georgian manor Rosleague Manor. Self-catering cottage available (Mitchell's Cottage, weekly Saturday-Saturday).

Activities

Free hiking in Connemara National Park (2000 hectares). Diamond Hill trail from visitor centre. Twelve Bens challenges for experienced hikers (up to 28km, 12-14 hours). Scubadivewest at Renvyle for diving (cold water, drysuit required).

Connectivity

4G coverage from all Irish carriers as of May 2025. No 5G yet. Power uses Irish three-pin Type G sockets.

Food

Village centre has Veldons Seafarer pub with seafood, Connemara Woodfire pizzeria (Th-Su 1-8PM), Wild Goat cafe, and Hungry Hiker cafe. Molly's Bar is the local for evening drinks. Circle K filling station 6km east for snacks.

Money

Euro (€) is the local currency. ATMs likely in Clifden if needed; village store may not have cashback. Most accommodation and restaurants accept cards but carry some cash for smaller establishments.

Transport

Bus Éireann 423 connects Letterfrack to Westport (1hr 40min) and Clifden (20min more) every two hours. Citylink 923 runs from Galway to Clifden, with four daily continuations to Letterfrack (under 2 hours from Galway). A car is essential for exploring beyond the village.
