Overview
Leenane (An Líonán, "where the tide fills") is a 200-person village on the south shore of Killary fjord, the boundary between County Galway and County Mayo. Its dramatic setting—glaciated mountains plunging to deep water—makes it a natural stop on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Before you go
Money
Euro (€) is the local currency. Hamiltons Bar has an ATM and serves as village shop. Cards accepted in hotels but cash may be needed for smaller establishments.
Packing
Waterproof layers and sturdy boots are essential even in summer. The boggy terrain soaks everything—bring gaiters for ridge walks like Mweelrea.
Transport
Bus Éireann 423 connects Leenane to Westport (hourly) and Clifden (another 40 min). No direct buses to Galway—you must change at Clifden.
Weather
Leenane is exposed and rainy; all seasons see precipitation. Summer brings longer days and milder temps, but mud is constant on trails. Winter roads may ice but are generally passable.
