Overview
Lençóis Maranhenses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil, featuring a unique landscape of undulating white sand dunes interspersed with freshwater lagoons that form during the rainy season between May and September. The park offers an otherworldly experience where shifting dunes meet blue and turquoise lakes, creating striking contrasts of white and blue across the horizon.

Activities
Two main trekking routes: Atins-Santo Amaro and Barreirinhas-Santo Amaro. Day trips to Lagoa Bonita and Lagoa Azul from Barreirinhas.
Food
Bring all food and water for park treks—no vendors inside. Plan 3 liters of water per person daily. Lodging in Atins or Santo Amaro offers local meals.
Transport
Main access via São Luís to Barreirinhas by bus. 4x4 vehicles needed around park perimeter; no motor transport allowed inside.
Weather
Best visited May-September when lagoons are full after rainy season. The constant breeze can be deceiving—sun protection is essential despite feeling cool.
