Why go?
Lapu-Lapu is an island city in Cebu Province, Philippines, part of Metro Cebu, and home to the main airport serving the entire Visayas region. The city includes most of Mactan Island and parts of Olango Island, offering white sand beaches, numerous dive sites, and resort accommodation ranging from budget hostels to luxury properties. Many travelers pass through for the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, but the area rewards those who linger with diving at sanctuaries like Hilutungan and Nalusuan, beach hopping at Shangri-La and Plantation Bay, and easy day trips to Olango Island's wildlife sanctuary.

Getting in
Most visitors arrive by air at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (IATA: CEB), the second most important airport in the Philippines and the only gateway for Metro Cebu and the rest of Cebu Province. The airport has two terminals: Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international services. By sea, most passengers arrive in Cebu City; by bus, use the north bus terminal in Mandaue or the south terminal in Cebu City. Cebu MyBus operates air-conditioned buses every 20 minutes from 6AM until midnight from the Mactan Airport to Park Mall and SM Mall in Cebu City.

Getting around
The simplest way to get around is by tricycle or multicab (small jeepney). Taxis are available with a flagdown rate of PHP 40 plus PHP 3.50 per succeeding 200 meters and PHP 3.50 per two minutes of waiting time; always insist on the meter as drivers may try to double the fare with tourists. For adventure, catch colorful jeepneys available 24 hours covering all corners of the island for as low as PHP 8 per ride. Mactan Island is connected to Mandaue by two bridges (Sergio Osmeña Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridge), with a third toll bridge (CCLEX) linking Cebu City to Córdova.

When to go
The Philippines has a tropical climate with dry season from November to May and rainy season from June to October. For diving, the best conditions are typically from March to May, though diving is possible year-round. Peak tourist season coincides with dry weather, so expect higher accommodation prices from December to April.

Where to stay
Accommodation in Lapu-Lapu skews toward mid-range resorts and luxury properties, particularly along Punta Engaño Road and Maribago Beach. Budget options include The Stopover Backpackers Hostel near the airport (dorm beds available) and GV Hotel downtown near the farmers market. For transit travelers, Aerotel Cebu inside Terminal 2 offers hourly rates for showering or napping between flights. Luxury properties include Shangri-La Mactan, Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino, Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, and Movenpick Mactan Island Cebu.

Food and drink
Most resorts have restaurants serving both Western and Asian cuisine, with all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets popular at higher-end properties. Gaisano Island Mall downtown has two buildings: the larger one features chain fast food restaurants and a bakery, while the smaller building has better-class Filipino restaurants plus sushi and pizza options. For cultural dining, The Jungle Restaurant and Entertainment in Maribago offers Filipino and international food with cultural shows including fire dancers, open noon to midnight with shows at 12:30, 6:30, 8, and 10PM. Rico's Lechon on Mactan Promenade near the airport is a local favorite for roasted pig.

Things to do
Diving is a major draw with sites including Kontiki, Talima, Tinggo, Hilutungan Sanctuary, Nalusuan Sanctuary, Shangri-La, and Cordova areas. Most dive sites require boat access though some allow shore entry. From Mactan, you can hire an outrigger boat to reach Cabilao or Balicasag on Bohol. Beach lovers can visit white sand beaches at Shangri-La, Plantation Bay, Blue Waters, White Sands, and Tambuli Beach Club. The Lapu-Lapu Monument (Lapu-Lapu Shrine) commemorates the local hero whose forces killed Magellan.
