Overview
Lao Cai is the main overland crossing between Vietnam and China in the north, handling most train traffic between Hanoi and Yunnan Province. Most visitors use it as a transit point en route to Sa Pa or to cross into Hekou, but the town itself offers Cốc Lếu markets with cheap Chinese goods and a relaxed border atmosphere.

Before you go
Money
ATMs are unreliable for foreign cards. Bring sufficient cash or be prepared to pay motorbike drivers to reach the universal ATM.
Transport
Taxis use meters reliably. The train is the main long-distance option to Hanoi; the bus station is 300m southwest of the railway station.
